  1. Allow instances with high disk bandwidth

Data processing workloads usually bounded on disk IO.
Currently google provides expensive internal SDD disks that are bounded by size (3TB) or external disks that are bounded by 240MB/s limit per instance.

AWS on the other hand allows internal hdd disks 48TB with 6GB/s performance (d2.8xlarge) or cheap persistent hdd disk that allow 1250MB/s bandwidth per instance. In any way, EC2 has much bigger offering for data processing workloads.

Thanks for your feedback, we’ll consider an HDD-based instance storage in future product planning.

Please refer to the comments on this entry for more details about how our Local SSD product works and what it costs. I believe you’ll find it superior to the similar offering from AWS (i2), but we don’t currently have an exact equivalent that is HDD-based (d2).

  2. Support MoSH connections from the browser

Currently Google Cloud supports using SSH to connect to instances from within the browser, which is honestly one of the best features about Google Cloud.

However, I often work over a mobile connection, which sees frequent interruptions in connectivity. SSH is traditionally very poor at this because it uses TCP for the connection.

MoSH (the mobile shell; https://mosh.mit.edu/) is an alternative to SSH that uses UDP with encrypted packets underneath to support more robust connectivity. It would be great if Google Cloud supported this on their VM instances and in the Cloud Console by default.

    The way that MoSH…

Thanks, we’ll consider this. But we don’t hear this request very often (you might be the first) so it’s not likely to make it to the top of the list soon.

  3. send mail using G suite from Compute Engine

I am using compute engine to host may PHP app, and want to send mail from app from G suit but after researching couple of hours, i just endup with deciding to move service to another host just due to complexity in simple things. At lest make simple these basic things as both are google service.

  4. show uptime in the VM instances list

In the VM Listing Page, show uptime in the VM instances list.
This helps in case of autoscaling on, so that we can see how they scaled in last N minites.

  5. Your document is hard to follow. I try to use SSH, but your instruction is poor.

I hope Google Cloud Platform improve technical document. Don't formal way, let's show as tutorials.

Thanks for your feedback. We have both quick-start and tutorials available (see comments for links).

  6. Sum of disk/snapshot sizes

Disk or snapshot pages should have sum of disk/snapshot sizes of the current page or total items at bottom of the page.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. We’ll keep this in mind when updating our UI.

  7. Recover deleted instance

If an instance is deleted, it is deleted permanently. Could you please provide a recover from trash option if possible?

    Thank you.

Based on a small number of customer requests, I am moving this from Declined to Under Review so we can accept further votes and feedback on whether some kind of “undelete” would be valuable.

  8. Permit custom DHCP options (DNS servers, domain-names)

It would be very helpful if I can specify DHCP options in my networks, minimally the DNS servers. In our use case, we have have a VPN that connects back to our internal network and large amount of infrastructure that does not have external DNS entries. (So the GCP router/DNS server can't see it).

It would be much easier if per-network we can just default these entries instead of fixing /etc/resolv.conf post-dhclient

Similarly, domain-name, search order, NTP would also be useful.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for the continued input on this item. We are taking a further look at this request, but it is not currently scheduled for implementation (we work in priority order, taking feedback from customers, here, and other sources).

  9. a link to tar up and download a snapshot

I just want to directly download an image without have to first save it to Google Cloud Storage.

  11. Add memory-utilization graph.

On the compute engine page for a particular instance and in general, we should be able to see a memory-utilization graph.

  12. Graphical web management interface (RDP like) for Windows instances.

Most of the companies doesn't allow direct RDP access from the internal network. Would be great to access the Windows instances using a web graphical remote access interface, like Logmein or similars.

Given that we try to provide a clean platform image for customers to build on as they see fit, it’s unlikely that we would offer default images with third party solutions such as logmein, but there is no reason we’re aware of that customers could not install such software if they want to. Perhaps this is something that could be configured as a Cloud Launcher image at some point (we’ll investigate the request, particularly if it gets more votes here).

  13. stop/start an instance group to save money

Our company needs an auto-scaled instance group for testing purpose, but would like to be able to "pause" it (= stop all instances) while we are not using it.

Actually we loose money if we keep it running, or need to delete the group everytime we want to "pause" it.

Have you tried editing the instance group to set its size to zero? I believe this will cause the instance group to spin down all the VMs which is what you want to happen.

  14. Scheduled GCE VM instance startup and shutdown

I'm using GCE for a small R&D project with limited budget. We would like to be able to start/stop instances automatically on a schedule e.g. to run database instances during office hours but shut them down out of hours to save costs. As far as I can tell, there is no instance scheduler in the current GCE toolset.

  15. Access to computers using graphical interface

When I make a new VM (linux) I would like access to the graphical interface useing some kind of remote desktop feature. But I can't find any description how to do this or how to activate this option. Also it would be easier if one or more VM's have this preconfigured.

Thanks. Probably you want to setup a remote terminal session with X11. There are instructions on how to do this on the web, but note that many system administrators do not want that software installed by default, which is why most of our supported OS images do not include those packages by default.

Is this consistently reproducible, or does it only happen on one specific instance you have?

  17. it would be nice if you could see the instance pricing all the time and not only when you create it.

When you create a compute engine instance, you can effectively see the calculated price that you will pay for a month of service, however once you already have an instance running and you add a new hard drive for example, you can no longer see how much will it cost to run for a month. also it should be clear if you pay for the space even if you don't use it, if when you create a new partition it means all space is used.

    regards

This is a nice idea – thanks, we’ll consider extending the calculator into more places.

  18. Show estimated pricing of each option as it's selected

Users should see cearly an estimated pricing as they create or even select these items: disks, DNS zones, snapshots, and even stopped instances (as they may consume disk or IPs)

Thanks, we do this already for VMs, but will consider it for other types.

  19. The ability to automatically stop instances when a budget is reached.

A user should have the ability so set a hard budget for their cloud spending.

This would allow users when setting up a budget to select an option that if that budget is exceeded that all the corrisponding instances would be stopped until the budget is expanded or a new billing period beings. Note this would be an opt in capability so that users won't have their instances stopped unless they choose that functionality.

This type of functionality would allow users to prevent run away configurations from doing financial harm to their companies allowing customers who are currently unwilling to…

  20. Compute Engine SSL Install

Can we please get either a decent walk through and/or a quick install feature for SSL certificates. I hate spending hours trying to figure out the particulars of Google Cloud engine and not being able to replicate the issue because it only happens in Google Cloud. Thanks!
