Ladies and gentleman, IPv6 Load Balancer termination is now available in Alpha. Visit our docs page 1 to sign up to participate in the Alpha. We know that some folks will want IPv6 all the way to the guest OS in the VM, and we know some of you will be itching for Beta and GA, but this is an important step forward and we hope it gives you some long awaited relief that we are listening, and we do understand this is important for you all. Happy routing! :)

    • Ability to change Cloud API access scopes on launched instances

Being able to change access scopes on an already launched instance should already be possible. It is a little ridiculous to have to disable boot disk deletion, delete the instance, and start a new instance (making sure all the other configuration is the same) just to change access scopes to use a feature you had not considered when first creating the instance. This is something that is very easy to do in AWS using IAM roles/instance profiles.

Hello all, I’m happy to announce that you can now change the service account or access scopes on a stopped VM. This feature is available to all users via a beta command, as documented at https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/access/create-enable-service-accounts-for-instances#changeserviceaccountandscopes

Thanks for your patience while we completed deploying this feature.

Note, we are still planning to add the ability to change scopes on a running VM in a future update (it’s at the very top of our list, we know it is a highly requested feature).

      • Backup schedules

Add the ability to create automatic backup schedules, much like Rackspace and others, for persistent disks. Currently the only way we have to do something like this is to run a cron task from an instance with gcloud commands. Preferably, we'd be able to take snapshots on regular intervals from a simple admin interface instead. Bonus points for adding rolling last n backup capability, like - last three hours, last three days, last three weeks, last three months.

        • Reverse DNS Record for static IP

It would be nice to configure own PTR record for reserved static IP.

Of course, releasing of such IP is not that easy anymore as next user might not like if given IP has weird PTR record of previous user. But short TTL times for PTR records and "ban" a released IP for while (if not doing this already?) will fix this problem.

PTR records can now be created under new functionality that is in alpha testing. If you would like to participate in early testing, please complete the form here:

            https://goo.gl/efG1sK

We may not be able to invite all requestors into the alpha, depending on customer demand, but all users will be able to use the feature when it reaches “beta” status.

            • New zone in South Korea

We're hoping that the day came that we can use GCE in our country. Amazon, Azure already came and doing wonderful things. I moved out from GCE to local hosting company because of poor latency and customer wants.

If Korea zone is created, I'll immediately move to GCE.
              Please do a wonderful job.

Thanks for your feedback, it’s great to see the support here for a South Korea region. We don’t have anything to announce at this time, but will make updates here when we do. Our regional deployments are strongly influenced by customer needs, so your feedback is very valuable to us in planning future growth. Thanks!

              • Add memory-utilization graph.

On the compute engine page for a particular instance and in general, we should be able to see a memory-utilization graph.

                      • Automatically create DNS records for GCE instances

When using ephemeral IPs for GCE instances, it would be desirable to have DNS A records automatically created in a Google Cloud DNS zone as soon as the ephemeral IP is bound to the instance. Instead, a developer must either poll the GCE API's instances.get method until the natIP field is populated, or add a startup script to the instance's image that performs a change request against the Google Cloud DNS API creating or updating the record(s) as needed.

I believe this is a common use case, wanting DNS records that map from (instancename.example.com) to the current IP of instancename…

                        • Columns configuration in VM Instances grid view

I'd like to configure the VM instances grid view in order to get more information about the instances that I have right there in that view without having to open instances detail.
One of the information that is good to have there is the machine type.

Hello all. We have now deployed column configuration options in the UI for the GCE area of our Console. We recognize that there have been several requests for additional columns, and we’re happy to implement those. If you’d like to suggest specific columns, please comment on this feature request and we’ll get to work on them! :)

                          • Support for MTU > 1460 bytes

If UDP packet's exceed the size of 1460 bytes, they seem to get fragmented by the network and cannot be reassembled accordingly on GCE instance.

Is it planned to increase the MTU or is there a known workaround how reassembly can be done accordingly?

                            • Rename Static IP Addresses

Could we have the ability to rename static IP addresses?

For example, you may have reserved a static ip address to use as your production ip for your web server, and names it "Production Web IP". Then later on the use of that server may change, and it is no longer used as your production web server, but you need to keep the same IP address (maybe it is registered with some external service as an allowed origin for some service that you will still be using.

In this case you will end up with a Static IP Address called…

                              • Provide Cloud NAS

It would be great to have something like AWS EFS (Cloud based Elastic NFS).

You could consider providing the NAS as AFS (Andrew FS) also, which has much better security for multi-tenant situations, support for Linux, Win, OSX and automatic client side caching, which would be very useful in a lot of HPC situations.

Some sort of GCE provided NAS would simplify the deployment of a project I am working on tremendously.

                                    • Load balancer "URL Map" does not support A/B testing via %traffic with sticky path selection.

I will have to install NGINX in front of the google load balancer, which is kinda redundant; however, it seems required as the current load balancer is unable to split traffic by either custom rules or by sticky path selection.

Specifically I'm looking for is a way to introduce a "trial" swap of only page "X" (defined by UrlMap) that would direct 10% of the traffic to a different server/ip/container cluster while recording this choice as a cookie for consistency. This would allow us to do some basic live testing and a/b testing without impacting all consumers.

                                      • Don't require --zone for gcloud compute instances commands

It would be nice not to have to constantly specify the zone of an instance when using the gcloud command. Clearly gcloud already has this information.

I need to use FreeBSD instances.

Hi, thanks for the request. This is not something Google is likely to publish ourselves, do to very low user interest, however it comes up every once in a while. We’ve talked with some of the FreeBSD maintainers at points in the past and shared best practices for preparing a GCE-ready image, but to our knowledge that work has not been completed. I’m checking internally to see if there are some recent guidelines we can post here if you’d like to make your own.
