Compute Engine

Welcome to the Google Compute Engine idea forum. You can submit and vote on ideas here to tell the Google Compute Engine team which features you’d like to see.

This forum is for feature suggestions, and is visited regularly by Google’s Product Managers. It is not actively monitored by our technical support team. If you’re looking for help forums, look here:

If you are looking to file a bug report for which you do not need 1:1 technical support, you can also visit our Public Issue Tracker

We can’t wait to hear from you!

  1. gcloud beta compute instances create-with-container multiple network interfaces support

gcloud beta compute instances create-with-container command should support creation of multiple network interfaces same as plain create command.
currently it ignores the definition of other --network-interface beyond the first one.

Hi, we believe this is a bug in gcloud. Similar functionality is possible through the Console UI (website). Our team is aware of the issue, however you may find it more helpful to file a bug in our Public Issue Tracker. To avoid a goose chase, I’m leaving this entry open here for now, but please be aware that UV is mostly for Feature Requests and staffed lightly, unlike the Issue Tracker which is staffed by our support team (and integrated into our internal bug tracking). If you’d like to file an Issue, the GCE tracker 1 please go ahead, and 2 has more information on how to use our Issue Trackers in general. Thx!

  4. Real time plots of the CPU usage available to embed in a web interface.

I would want to, based on an instance id, get returned a link to / or some embeddable code to put in my own web interface, so my user can watch their instance humming away. (In my example, the user would be watching their container build).

Interesting idea. This might be a bit beyond what would make sense for us to provide as a core platform capability, but it could definitely be done with something like a collectd agent (for example the version Stackdriver uses) and some downstream tech.

  5. I spent several days to learn how to install docker and run tensor flow in google cloud.

Even though I spent several days and tried to find out a way to do, still I cannot figure out Udacity Deep Learning class with TensorFlow.
Instead, I tried to do same thing in AWS. it is difficult but can figure out it finally. There is NO correct (updated) instruction in google cloud.

Is this consistently reproducible, or does it only happen on one specific instance you have?

  7. Migrate VM onto GCE preconfigured image

I've migrated my VM to GCE from another host via CloudEndure. I'd like to have a feature that would migrate everything onto one of Compute Engine's preconfigured operating system images. The feature would be nice on to have on CloudEndure side during original migration also.

This is very difficult to implement, because it’s not easy to know what “everything” means. We think you’re saying you want all the software you’ve installed and settings you’ve changed to be migrated. But without a very deep understanding of what OS you started with (exactly), it’s hard to tease apart the difference between what was there and what you installed.

Allow administrator of several VM instances to see VM usage (grouped either by username or specific instance).

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. While it’s under consideration, some of this may be possible using our Billing Export functionality.

Hello, thanks for your post. Unfortunately it’s not quite clear what you are suggesting from what you wrote. Please feel free to add details about the different issues you’re mentioning by commenting on this entry. For example, what do you mean that it takes too much time to send replies from a server? How is your application configured to use our zones, and what does “switch” mean?

    Thanks

  11. CONNECT WITH A TERMINAL FROM A LINUX BOX

Enable the STANDARD EVERYDAY method that EVERYONE ON THE PLANET USES SINCE 1995 to connect to a VPS over SSH using a terminal from a Linux box. What is all this garbage?

Hi, I’m sorry but I don’t really understand your request. A standard ssh client will work just fine if you SSH to the instance by IP address, assuming you have added your SSH public-key via gcloud or the web console first. For details please refer to the docs1, or visit our gce-discussion group2 to discuss with other users and our support engineers further.

  12. Can't find options to set up GPU.

I came here to try out Compute Engine with GPUs. Blog Posts told me that this is possible. I thought I upgraded to a paid account and added my credit card. However I can't find the GPUs listed under "quota".

I suspect that your philosophy is that serious users will be able to navigate this byzantine system, but it is frustrating not to be able to get started; in fact that prevents me from BECOMING a serious user.

Hmm, how can you tell if your account is “upgraded” so that you should be able to see the “Google Compute Engine”…

Sorry to hear about your experience, we’ll look into making the experience easier to use. In the meantime however, please visit the gce-discussion Google Group if you need some tips in the right direction to get started.

  14. Make graphs anchoreable at a specific time.

The graphs are nice but there is no obvious way to zoom onto 1 hour 3 days ago for example. This also means that if I give the link to a console to someone and he opens it a few hours later, he won't see what I meant.

Thanks, that’s an interesting suggestion. In the meantime, if you have a lot of needs around monitoring and graphing, you might want to check out Stackdriver, which has a richer set of functionality than the simple graphs on our console (though I’m not sure if it allows you to anchor a graph).

  15. Payment in advance (pre-paid) via local Indonesia bank account, e.g. BCA. BNI, Mandiri

Payment in advance (pre-paid) via local Indonesia bank account, e.g. BCA. BNI, Mandiri. User GCP can pay in advance via local bank accounts easily. Not only use credit card. Or use Indonesia local payment processor like Doku.
User can top up balance in GCP via local bank account.

  16. quota apply can create to user profile with a name

Let user can define their quota in a name and can be quickly apply to their other project...

ex: production-big-server-farm for 2000 cpu core and 100 static ip address...

Thanks, we’ll consider this, but it’s probably a lot of engineering for a feature that most users rarely use.

  17. Processor usage chart on micro and small instances.

Processor usage chart on micro and small instances is unclear. It should be clear if 100% on the graph indicates the available power for the shared instance or the entire processor.

  18. Ability to set tag in instance group (and not just template)

This will be very helpful in using the same template for multiple environments, i.e. dev/staging/prod but tagging each instance with a different tag, for example web-app-dev/web-app-stg/web-app-prod

It is also possible to use these tags for deployments and configuration management tasks

  19. Larger - More Persistent Disks per Intance

Our offering could use more than 64TB of persistent storage per instance. In our case either allowing a larger disk size or multiple 64TB disks would be an improvement. For now, the most I could see us needing would be around 500TB but of course someday that will sound tiny :)
