  1. Custom description of machines

I use an orchestration tool that autonames the machines. This makes aligning what the machine is very difficult when looking at the dashboard. I'd really benefit from some editable field I can click into and make annotations on ("GitLab server", "Rails application", etc).

  2. Group pricing history per project

We've split our GCE hosting into separate projects to get better insights into spending. However the billing history shows all the projects combined and there's no easy way to see a split per project.

Either the console should allow you to filter or group on project or the exported csv should put the project in a separate field; right now it's in the description as (Source: <project name>). Or both.

  3. Status icon on main GCE window to enable to check whether user's startup-script is successfully run or not.

Currently users have to click serial console of each instance after run the instance(s) which startup-script is configured, for example, jupyter server, flask, etc...

To overcome the lazy action, GCE always check user's startup-script running and show the color status icon on main window of GCE instance list, which explains it outputs error or not.
RED icon: error occur in user's startup-script
YELLOW icon: Warning occur in user's startup-script
    BLUE icon: Successfully run!

  4. Save console output after machine shutdown

If a machine shutdowns, the serial console log is lost. This makes debugging harder for such cases where the machine shutdowns during boot or otherwise

  5. Sum of disk/snapshot sizes

Disk or snapshot pages should have sum of disk/snapshot sizes of the current page or total items at bottom of the page.

  6. Schedule Hardware Upgrades

Changing RAM/Core count requires to shutdown the machine, editing it and starting it again.

It would be nice if one could schedule a hardware upgrade so that all of this happens automatically at a chosen time and date. This would result in minimal downtime for non-redundant system.

  7. Give advance warning of preemptible instance 24 hour termination

It would be great if preemptible instances gave early warning of the 24 hour termination time limit so that another preemptible instance could be started in its place. Essentially what I want is a managed instance group made up of preemptible instances which replace instances preemptively when they see that one is going to be preempted soon, and have the ability to fall back to using standard instances when there isn't spare capacity.

  8. Updating php

I am using bitnami version of wordpress and I am looking forward to updating the php version of this which is 7.0.31 to 7.2+ , but there is no option to do this as far as I know. An easy solution to updating php to the latest could be a great feature as is known with shared / other hosting companies.

    Otherwise GCP is awesome

  9. Alerts based on threshold set or outbound traffic rate

If a VM gets compromised and used to send large amounts of data to the internet it will be very helpful to have alerts based on an policy set of a maximum amount of GB per VM or maybe alerts based on an usage outside the normal average of a particular VM.

That will avoid a huge invoice that will definitively impact a company.

  10. Clarify the use of IAM roles and GCE access scopes in the inline help

Please add the fact that you need to provide both IAM roles and GCE Access scopes to grant the right permissions to a Service Account to the inline help texts in the Cloud Console.

You need to set both the right role AND access scope. It literaly took us literally days to find this.

This is the particular part that cleared things up: https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/access/service-accounts?hl=en_US#usingroles

This would have helped to have inline or directly referenced to in the inline help text:

"The level of access a service account has is determined by a combination of access scopes and IAM roles so…

  11. Canadian Data Centre is Requested

Many many clients asked us to host their site / app on a Canadian data centre.
We try to use Google Cloud Platform but only Amazon and Microsoft offer Canadian hosting.

It would be the best to have the power of Google Cloud on Canadian Data Centres.

  14. show uptime in the VM instances list

In the VM Listing Page, show uptime in the VM instances list.
This helps in case of autoscaling on, so that we can see how they scaled in last N minites.

  18. Quotas page improvements

The "Quotas" page should be improved to to enhance the user experience. We have been running out of some resources and it's not easy to figure out why. Some ideas to help improve this page:

    1) Each resource should have a link to what is in use. It is not clear what is using the quota in many instances. It should ideally link back to the cluster that is using it in addition to the ID of the resource.

    2) There should be a way to easily identify anything that is no longer in use. We can see under the…

Thanks, good suggestions. We’re currently revamping quota management, and users might notice we’ve launched a new page under the IAM Admin section of the console (and the old page points there with a link). Over time we expect to make further improvements to help people understand how these quotas interact, and “what you need to do what.”

We can only imagine that you mean you want a desktop user interface installed inside the guest OS, for example X windows or some desktop windows manager inside a Linux VM? Because Cloud IaaS is largely used to provide servers, this is not the default configuration of any of our pre-provided Linux images. Our suggestion currently would be that you create a VM, install the specific desktop packages you would like and configure them just they way you want, and then create your own disk Image from that VM’s disk. You can then use that Image to start any additional VMs you’d like over time.

Note that Windows of course comes with a desktop environment that you can use via RDS for administrative and testing purposes (or you may use RDS as a workstation for one or more users, if you properly license it).

  20. Option to launch VMs without persistent boot volume

In some cases we don't need persistent storage for the boot disk, i.e. writes don't have to replicated outside the VM. For VMs that are disposable, we don't ever need to do a backup of the VM main boot disk. It should allow faster data writes and reduce network bandwidth usage.
