Cloud DNS

How can we improve Cloud DNS?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Add search to Cloud DNS zone editor UI

Today when editing a zone in the Google Cloud Console the records are paginated.
One of our domains has 1486 records and if I need to manually update a record it takes a bit of paging to find it.

Please add a search or filter option to quickly find a record, it should look in the record name, type and values.

  2. Internal DNS entries for instance tags

When a tag is applied to an instance it should generate an internal dns entry.

    Example:

tag prod-db is applied to prod-db-1 instance which has an internal ip of 10.0.0.1

prod-db-1 would have a fqdn of: prod-db-1.c.project-1.internal and a lookup against that host from a different instance would resolve the ip to 10.0.0.1.

I'm proposing that additional host entries be added for tags. Example:

    prod-db-tag.c.project-1.internal

This is useful because just like tags are used for source/destination tags in the firewall they would also be useful via dns from the instances.

Yes, it's entirely possible to write scripts that determine these…

  3. Latency Resource Record Sets for DNS, like GeoDNS

I know there is HTTP(S) Load Balancing, but it not work for non HTTP application like UDP based or mail service, and HTTP(S) Load Balancing is also expensive, paid for every hour but not pay-as-you-go. It will be good to support GeoDNS like Route53 and that's a easier way to set up Cross-Region Load Balancing.

  4. DNS usage statistics

It would be nice to get some usage statistics report for cloud DNS, something like the reporting wizard of UltraDNS or something similar.

In the crudest case, just add bigquery export so that custom reports can be generated.

  6. Domain Alias

If I have domain "abc-def.com" as a main zone.
I want the ability to also add "abcdef.com" as an alias zone and what is defined in the first should be available for the alias also.

  7. DNS failover

Add the ability to set a primary IP and secondary etc.

Based on probes if the primary IP failed x amount of times failover until it's re reachable.

  8. Latency Based Routing

Latency based routing that has cloud functions as a backend service. Thus a request originating from Germany will be served by cloud function residing in europe region and not by the cloud function in americas.

  10. Move domain between projects

Not sure if this can already be done, but a way to move a domain between projects in the UI, rather than having to re-add all the records manually.

  11. Record Templates

Ability to add "Google Apps" as MX with a click (or two).
An even more services: Heroku, Zoho, Tumblr, Google Calendar, Google Talk, WP, mailgun, mailchimp, etc.

  12. Issue when creating nested subdomain of verified domain through API

    Verified domain: example.com
    Subdomain: d.c.b.a.example.com

When trying to create a nested subdomain of a verified domain, at a certain level, it errors with:
ERROR: (gcloud.dns.managed-zones.create) HTTPError 400: Please verify ownership of the 'd.c.b.a.example.com.' domain (or a parent) at http://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/ and try again

The weird thing is that there are no issues with creating a.example.com, b.a.example.com or c.b.a.example.com through the API (gcloud CLI or terraform).

Also, creating the same domain via the control panel works with no issues. We are doing that currently as a workaround and importing it in the terraform state but it is cumbersome and error prone.
